Seems to me that if the main problem in health care is the ridiculously high prices for everything then that should be the main focus for reform. How do we lower the prices of health care and consequently the cost of carrying health insurance? I haven't researched this much, but I think that the costs are so high because doctors are afraid of being sued. So, they order all sorts of tests that aren't really necessary because if they don't find that condition 1 in 50 patients, that one person will sue! The high cost is also related to classic supply and demand. There are way too many people for how many doctors there are. So, how do we encourage people to become doctors? I think it used to be encouraged by their making a very nice salary and being highly honored in our society. I think those incentives have been deteriorating.
So, are any of these things really being discussed in this whole debate? Do we really need a government plan (which we totally cannot afford) to lower costs? Why not reform the liability of doctors a bit and create free things up so more people go into the healthcare professions?
